A private tutor profile that brings enquiries: what to write and what not

A profile card with a photo, lines of text and a row of five stars, four of them filled
A teacher profile: what to write and what to leave out

The short answer: a good private tutor profile answers a parent's four questions within a few seconds: what you teach, for what age, how you teach and where. One sharp headline, precise subjects and levels, a short description of what a lesson with you looks like, and a clear service area. Everything else is an addition.

A parent looking for a tutor goes through several cards in a row. They do not read, they scan. The goal of the profile is not to tell your whole story, but to make them stop on your card and press.

The headline: the line that does most of the work

The headline is what is read first. In Teaching's student portal it matters even more: in the card in the search results your name and photo are not shown until a parent presses "Reveal". What is shown from the start is the headline, the subjects, the levels, the area, the price hint, the way of teaching, the distance range and the rating. That is, the headline is your "name" in the first stage.

A good headline answers "what, for whom, and what is special". Three examples before and after:

BeforeAfter
An experienced private tutorMath for seventh to tenth grade, preparation for 4 and 5 units
Lessons in all subjectsEnglish for third to sixth grade, with an emphasis on reading and conversation
A music teacherPiano for beginners from age 7, adults too

What the "after" versions have in common: you can understand from them immediately whether you suit. "An experienced tutor" says nothing to the parent of a child in eighth grade. "Preparation for 5 units" tells them exactly what they need to know.

What not to write in a headline: superlatives ("the best in town"), promises ("100 on the matriculation guaranteed"), capital letters and exclamation marks. They make the profile look like an advertisement, and less like a tutor.

Subjects and levels: less is more

The natural tendency is to tick as many as possible, to appear in as many searches as possible. In practice that weakens the profile: a parent who sees eight subjects begins to suspect that you are not an expert in any of them.

Tick what you really teach well, and the levels in which you are most confident. In Teaching's portal the levels are Elementary, Middle school, High school and Academic, and the subjects are chosen from a fixed list (math, English, physics, psychometric preparation and more), so the parent filters by them.

"About me": 3 sentences that work

In Teaching's portal there are two fields related to "how you teach". The first, "How you teach", is a choice: online lessons, at the student's home or at the tutor's. The second, "About me", is a free text that appears on the full tutor page.

In the free text, three sentences are enough:

  1. Who you suit. "I work mainly with students who feel that they are 'not good at math' and got stuck."
  2. What a lesson looks like. "In every lesson we solve together exercises from the class material, and at the end the student solves one exercise alone that they have not seen."
  3. What your background is. "I taught for six years in a middle school, and since then I have been teaching privately."

Note: there are no inflated titles here and no "passion for teaching". There is a description a parent can imagine. If you have a relevant certificate or experience in a school, write them simply.

What not to write: students' grades with names, recommendations that you did not get permission to publish, and criticism of other tutors or of the school.

Service area and radius, without revealing an address

Many tutors hesitate to enter an address, and rightly. In Teaching's portal the exact address is never shown. It is used only to calculate distance, and the parent sees a range: up to 2 km, 2-5, 5-10, 10-20 or over 20. The location on which the distance is calculated is also rounded to a coarse grid, so that it is impossible to locate your home from repeated searches.

Two things to pay attention to:

  • The radius determines who will see you. You appear in the search when the address the parent searched for is within the service radius you set. A radius that is too small hides you from the neighbouring area. A radius that is too large will bring enquiries that you will not want to travel to. Think how much travel time you are willing to do, and set it accordingly.
  • Check the pin on the map. Locating addresses in Israel is not always accurate. If the pin fell in another place, you can drag it to the right place.

How this search looks from the parent's side, including the distance ranges and the exposure of the phone: a private tutor near home.

A price hint: yes, and carefully

The "Price range" field in the portal is a hint only, not a final price. It helps parents filter in advance, and saves you calls that end in "that's expensive for us". Write a range and not a single number, for example (as an illustration only) "NIS 130-160 per lesson, by grade level". If you are not sure what the right price is, there is a guide: the price of a private math lesson.

Online: tick only if you really teach that way

If you tick "online lessons", you will also appear to parents outside your radius who turned on the option "Also show online lessons" in the search. They will see you after the tutors in their own area. That widens the audience, but also brings enquiries from far away, so tick only if you are really willing to teach remotely. How to do it well: private lessons online.

Before you publish: a preview

In Teaching's app, in the "Public profile" screen, there is a preview: "This is what a student will see". It is exactly the same card that a parent will see. Go over it like a parent:

  • Is it clear from the headline alone what you teach and for whom?
  • Do the subjects and levels match what is written in the headline?
  • Are there spelling mistakes?
  • Are the price hint and the area sensible?

After saving you will receive a permanent link to your page (teaching.co.il/t/...) with a "Copy link" button. This is the link to send to parents, put in groups and add to a signature. More channels for advertising: how to find private students.

How enquiries arrive

When a parent presses "Reveal WhatsApp", they receive the number you entered and can open a conversation with a ready message that says they found you in the portal. If you also entered an email for enquiries (not required, and not your sign-in email), a button to reveal it will appear too. The phone does not appear on the page itself, which makes automatic harvesting of numbers harder. In the profile screen there is also a counter "Portal inquiries this month", so you can see whether a change in the headline had an effect.

Ratings on the card come only from verified students: after a lesson you send the student a personal link to rate you (the "Ask for a review" button on the student's card). A parent who only revealed your details cannot rate you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important thing in a private tutor's profile?

The headline. It is the first line a parent reads, and in Teaching's portal it appears on the card even before your name is revealed. A good headline says what you teach, to whom, and what is special about you, in one line.

How long should the description be?

Short. 3-5 sentences are enough: who you suit, what a lesson with you looks like, and what your experience is. A parent who wants more details will contact you.

Should I write a price in the profile?

A price hint helps parents filter in advance and saves you calls. In Teaching's portal there is a "Price range" field, which is shown as a hint only and not as a final price.

Will my address appear in the portal?

No. The exact address is never shown. It is used only to calculate distance, and the distance is shown in ranges: up to 2 km, 2-5, 5-10, 10-20 and over 20.

Who sees my profile in the portal?

Anyone who searches the portal, without signing up, provided that the address they searched for is within the service radius you set, or that they turned on "Also show online lessons" and you teach online. Appearing in the portal is included in the Pro plan and the free trial.
