A parent is not paying for private lessons? How to act

When a payment is late: a calm order of steps

The short answer: first stop the debt from growing, and only then collect it. Send a factual breakdown of the lessons and the amount, call and offer an arrangement, and if there is no progress - stop new lessons until the debt is settled. In most cases a parent who does not pay simply forgot, does not know how much they owe, or is going through a hard time. A calm order of action solves most situations without burning the relationship.

Step 1: a breakdown of lessons and the amount, without accusation

Before anything else, make sure you know exactly what the debt is. Go over the lessons and check three things: that every lesson really took place, that the prices are right (private or group, a special price if there was one), and that no cancelled lesson is left in the debt.

Then send a private message with the list of lessons, a date and price for each, and the total. For example (names and amounts are for illustration):

Hello Dana, I wanted to tidy up the account. 6 of Omer's lessons from September and October are still open, a total of NIS 900. I am attaching the list. If it is convenient to split into two payments, no problem.

A breakdown like this does two things: it shows that the request is grounded, and it gives the parent a chance to say "wait, we already paid for that lesson" if there really is a mistake. You will find more ready-made wording, including for an accumulated debt, in a WhatsApp payment reminder for parents.

If there is no response after a few days, send a second reminder, shorter.

Step 2: a talk and arranging payment

Messages are easy to ignore. A short phone call changes the picture. A few things that help:

  • Open with a question, not a complaint. "I saw you have not managed to settle October, is everything all right?" invites an honest answer.
  • Offer a specific arrangement. Two payments, a clear date for each. "Whenever it suits you" usually does not happen.
  • Sum up in writing. After the call send a short message: "As we agreed, NIS 450 by the 15th and NIS 450 by the 30th." That way there is a record, and it is clear to both sides what was agreed.
  • Listen. Sometimes it turns out that something did not work: the child did not like the lessons, the parent thought the price was different. It is better to find that out now.

Step 3: pausing new lessons until it is settled

If the arrangement is not kept and the debt keeps growing, every additional lesson increases the amount you may not receive. At this stage it is worth announcing, in writing and politely, that the next lessons wait until the account is settled:

Hello Dana, until we close the open account (NIS 900) I am pausing Omer's lessons. As soon as it is settled, we will go back to the regular hour.

This is an unpleasant decision, especially when you care about the student. But continuing lessons without payment helps nobody, and the bigger the debt, the harder it is for the parent to close it. A decision like this is easier if it is written in advance in the rules that the parent received.

What not to do

A few natural reactions that usually make things worse:

  • Posting in the parents' group or sharing with others. A debt is a private matter. Public exposure hurts you no less than the parent, and can get complicated.
  • Talking about the debt in front of the student. The child is not responsible for payment. The conversation is only with the parent.
  • Continuing lessons "until it sorts itself out". The debt only grows, and so does the frustration.
  • Raising your tone. An angry message is easy to pass on and hard to take back. It is better to wait a day and write a factual message.

Prevention: payment in advance, a lesson package and signed terms

The best way to deal with a parent who does not pay is for it not to happen:

  • Payment in advance or a lesson package. When lessons are paid before they take place, no debt builds up. We wrote about the advantages and disadvantages of each method in in advance, per lesson or at the end of the month?.
  • A fixed payment date and a fixed reminder. A breakdown sent on the same day every month makes payment routine.
  • Signed terms. A short document that explains when to pay, what happens on a cancellation, and what happens when a payment is delayed. If it is written and signed in advance, pausing lessons is the application of an agreed rule and not a punishment. How to word it and how to get it signed is in terms for private lessons.
  • Do not let the debt grow. A debt of one month is a technical matter. A debt of half a year is a dispute.

How Teaching helps you not reach this situation

Teaching does not collect money from parents, and parents do not pay through it. The payment goes directly between you. What it does do:

  • You see every debt early. In the "Collection" screen there is a card for each student with a debt: the amount and the number of unpaid lessons. A debt does not "hide" in a table.
  • A ready breakdown. A WhatsApp, SMS or email button opens a ready message with the list of lessons and the amount. You send the message yourself, after you have checked it.
  • A partial payment is marked correctly. In "Mark payment" you mark only the lessons that were paid, and the rest stays open.
  • Rules and terms. Whoever turns on the Studio module can set cancellation rules, upload a PDF of terms and ask the parent or the student to sign it through a personal link. There the student also sees their own balance due.

When to turn to legal advice

If you have been through all the steps and the debt is still open, you can consider a legal step. This is not legal advice, and in any specific case it is worth consulting a lawyer. General information, as it appears on the government website (checked in October 2026):

  • According to gov.il, the amount of a small claim can be up to NIS 39,900, as of 1.1.2026.
  • The fee is 1% of the claim amount, and at least NIS 50.
  • A private person can file, including an exempt dealer or an authorised dealer. A limited company cannot file a small claim.

More detail on the process is on the Kol Zchut website. Before such a step it is worth considering whether the amount justifies the time and the damage to the relationship, and making sure you have documentation: the list of lessons, the messages you sent and the arrangement agreed in writing.

Frequently asked questions

What do you do when a parent does not pay for private lessons?

Send a breakdown of lessons and the amount, and if there is no response - call and offer an arrangement. If the debt is still open, pause new lessons until it is settled. Only after all of these do you consider a legal step, and preferably after advice.

Is it allowed to stop giving lessons to a parent who does not pay?

Usually this is the tutor's business decision, and it is worth having it written in advance in the rules or the terms. Tell the parent in writing and politely before the pause. In a specific case, check with a lawyer.

Can I file a small claim over a lesson debt?

According to the gov.il website, a small claim can be up to NIS 39,900 (as of 1.1.2026), and the fee is 1% of the claim amount and at least NIS 50. A private person, including an exempt or authorised dealer, can file; a limited company cannot. This is general information and not legal advice.

How do you prevent parents' debts in the first place?

Payment in advance or a lesson package, a fixed payment date, a reminder with a breakdown of lessons, and signed terms that explain what happens on a cancellation and on a late payment.
